The library of the Institute of Musicology operates in conjunction with the main Library of the Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts, where they process musicological literature and mediate information about it through their catalogues. The library is primarily used by the researchers of the Institute, but it is also open to the public, especially with regard to literature which is perhaps not available at other general and specialised libraries. Books, periodical publications (currently the institute sustains subscriptions for about 20 scholarly journals), various music materials (especially recent prints and copies of older manuscripts) and sound materials (records, compact disks and audio cassettes), with special emphasis on Slovenian composers, (together more than 7000 units, with yearly additions of more than 200) are inventoried at the Institute in an alphabetical name catalogue, while information on literature acquired since 1991 is also available through the shared electronic database in the COBISS system (50100 – Slovenian Academy of Sciences and Arts – Musicology).
Part of the library of the Institute is also the acquired Donation of Prof Reinhard Strohm. Professor Reinhard Strohm (Oxford, UK) donated 820 books to the Institute of Musicology in late 2003. The Institute inventorised all of them and in 2005 incorporated them into the institute library. The donation mostly contains musical monographs, but in addition there are also a series of Festschrifts, scores, a few serial publications, catalogues of libraries and exhibitions, auction catalogues and bibliographies.
On 18 August 2008 Prof. Reinhard Strohm donated to the Institute of Musicology another 488 volumes of musicological literature; above all monographic workd, music scores, periodicals, but also audio materials on CDs.
In 2007 the institute's library was enriched by a smaller donnation of books belonging to the late Head of the Institute, Dr Danilo Pokorn. The corpuis donated by the family comprises literature in Slovenian language and some encyclopedias.
