Transcending Traditional Roles: Female Musicians on the Path to Artistic Freedom
21–22 November 2024
Prešeren Hall, Novi trg 4, Ljubljana, Slovenia
The Institute of Musicology ZRC SAZU invites you to an international conference exploring the evolving roles and agency of female musicians within broader contexts of musicology, sound studies, gender theory, and feminist discourse. Transcending Traditional Roles brings together scholars from diverse fields to critically examine how music intersects with issues of female emancipation, shifts in gender norms, and the socio-economic factors shaping artistic freedom.
Through presentations on gender and music across historical and social contexts, this conference aims to contribute to ongoing scholarly dialogues on gender equality, women’s empowerment, and the re-evaluation of musical and sonic practices. We invite academics, students, and professionals interested in these themes to join us for a rich exchange of ideas and insights.
The event is organized within the framework of the research program "Researches in the History of Music in Slovenia" (ARIS P6-0004), funded by the Slovenian Research and Innovation Agency. It is also financially supported by the Austrian Cultural Forum.
