Description

Notation and musical interpretation

International musicological conference, Friday 24 October 2008

The conference »Notation and musical interpretation« focused on relationship between music as notated text on the one hand and its musical interpretation on the other. The history of musical notation raises a number of interrelated questions, e.g.: (i) what is the function of a written piece of music in relation to the composer’s conception, as well as with respect to its audible re-enactment; (ii) where lie the boundaries between a reconstruction of the historical past and artistic interpretation of music from a given historical environment; (iii) what is the exact meaning of a written piece of music, and what a written piece of music from a given historical period just tacitly implies, etc. Besides general topics, the conference papers concentrated especially on two thematics: (i) questions of interpretation of music from the 16th to the 18th centuries, and (ii) discussions on liturgical monody in the later Middle Ages.

Openning of the conference on 24 October 2008 in the Mala dvorana ZRC SAZU.
